Ex D.E.A. Agent Michael Brown (code name: “The White Rabbit”) visited Scott Silverman’s Your Crisis Coach podcast and shared his immense knowledge about the countless global phenomena that intertwine to bring fentanyl into U.S. homes and ultimately kill an airplane full of people every day via accidental overdose.
As truly one of the most exciting podcast guests we’ve ever had, and certainly with the most interesting background, Michael Brown (pictured, center, battling cartels in the jungles of South America) spent 32 years as a D.E.A. Agent before transitioning to the private sector.
And Michael Brown is knowledgeable as well about how all the clandestine global operations work together to bring counterfeit fentanyl into our homes. His particular area of expertise is the cartels of Mexico and South America which are such a vast operation, employing 200,000 people or more. These cartels are so embedded into the infrastructure of Mexico and South America that it makes it very difficult for the U.S. and Mexico collaborate on battling their influence.
But while the cartels manufacture much of the fentanyl and carry it across the finish line into the U.S. (San Diego being possibly the most frequent entry point), China also has an influential role as the supplier of precursor chemicals that the illicit fentanyl is made from.
Potential Solutions
Michael Brown also discussed many ideas he had to try and curb the tidal wave of fentanyl coming into our country. Michael discussed improved detection capabilities, and doing more to detect the drugs coming across the border, which is an area he works in now as an interdiction specialist for Rigaku Analytics.
Education and Prevention: Both Michael and Scott also touted the importance of working on educating people in the U.S. about the dangers of these drugs and providing more proactive and preventative treatment and mental health support to those who are ‘at-risk’ of losing their life to a drug overdose. The hope behind this education and prevention campaign is that we can reduce the demand for these drugs and make the multi-billion drug operation less profitable for the many bad actors who are presiding over it.
